The same authorship rule applies no matter what you're making. A book, a short film, a photograph, a song, a line of code, or a logo all face the same question from the U.S. Copyright Office: did a human make meaningful creative choices with the AI's output, not just describe what they wanted. Trademark protection, from the USPTO, is different and much narrower — it only applies to marks used to identify a business, like a logo or brand name, and it says nothing about the contents of a book, a film, or an image. Copyright is the protection that actually covers the work itself, and it applies the same way whether that work is a novel, a movie, a photograph, or a mark.

There's a real, documented spectrum here: the more a person demonstrably rewrites, redraws, recomposes, or adds original material to an AI-generated starting point, the more of the final work counts as provably human — and full copyright can apply when AI is used purely as a starting point and the piece is substantially reworked by hand. Applicants also carry a duty to disclose AI-generated content and explain the human author's contribution when they register.
